What Is A Barbour Jacket?

A friend of mine who runs a fashion blog was recently asked what a Barbour Jacket was. Not knowing the answer, she did a little research and this is what she found.

The Barbour Jacket might not be hat well known in the USA but in England it is as well known as whiskey. This jacket, while being comfortable, also great durability and class and at the same time will protect you from chilling winds and biting frost.
Advertised as the country men’s best friend, these versitile jackets have graduated from the cliché and moved into high-class urban society and even Hollywood. The jackets are made from high quality Egyptian cotton, with strong metal zips and brass studs stitched within the seams. The jacket itself is light-weight and comes in different cuts and styles to flatter the figure. In 1839, from the humblest of beginnings, the Barbour Jacket was born. John Barbour opened a shop at 5 Market Place, South Shields, with the support of his wife Margaret Haining and their 11 children. The initial clientele seemed to only be a mix of sailors, shipyard, river and dock workers or people from the local fishing community. Most of the profits from the shop were coming from the sale ofwaxed cotton jackets. The jackets were waxed to withstand the harsh wet weather of the area. The ability of these jackets to keep you warm no matter what the weather was so good and their fame soread so wide, That during both world warsm WW1 and WW2, they were greatly sort after by army personnel. To this day, the jackets are still totally hand stitched with 100,000 jackets being made at their South Shields factory in England.
In 1908, Barbour published its first catalogue, advertising jackets for their biggest clients like sailors, farmers, fishermen etc.

By 1917,
the mail order catalogue business was flourishing with 75% orders, including international sales from Hong Kong, Chile and South Africa to mention a few. Under the recommendations of Duncan Barbour, the company in the 1930's went into production of a range of clothing for the motorcyclist.
The next step for the company was to become manufactures and marketers and that happened in 1957, moving their factory to the Simonside Trading Estate with is on the fringe of South Shields. In 1974, the Duke of Edinburgh gave Barbour it's first Royal Warrant. This led to the design of Barbour classics like the Bedale which is a short lightweight riding jacket, the Border and the Beaufort jacket. Barbour classic jackets shifted from country wear to casual wear with people donning the jacket for everyday activities.

Today, Barbour has over 2000 products for all seasons, and caters to Women and Children as well. There are 8 retail shops spread across the UK, with 29 shops worldwide in countries like Germany, Holland, Austria, France, US, Italy, Spain, Argentina, New Zealand and Japan.
